Fresh mulch is the fastest way to make a yard look cared for. Done right, it also holds moisture in the soil, keeps roots cooler in summer and slows down weeds. Done wrong, piled against the house or heaped around tree trunks, it causes more problems than it solves. Your landscaping should be neat and just the way you want it, and that starts with the beds.

What Mulch Installation Includes
A full mulch job is more than dumping a load on the beds. Every install covers the prep, the edge and the finish.
- Mulch brought to you. No trips to the supply yard and no bags in your trunk.
- Bed cleanout. Leaves, sticks and debris raked out, and visible weeds pulled before anything goes down.
- Fresh bed edging. A clean spade-cut edge between the lawn and the bed.
- Even spreading at the right depth, pulled back from the house, tree trunks and plant stems.
- Clean finish. Walks and driveway blown off so there is no mulch left on the hard surfaces.
Buying Mulch or Having It Installed
Most people searching for mulch near me are pricing the material. That works if you have the time, a truck and a strong back. Here is how the three ways to get mulch on your beds compare.
| Bagged mulch | Bulk pickup | Mulch installation | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What you do | Buy, haul, open and spread every bag | Borrow a truck or pay for delivery, then shovel and spread | Nothing. Point at the beds |
| Bed prep and edging | On you | On you | Included |
| Getting the depth right | Easy to come up short | Easy to over-order or pile it too deep | Measured for your beds |
| Cleanup | Empty bags and a dirty driveway | A leftover pile on the driveway | Done before we leave |
| Best for | One or two small beds | Big beds, if you have the time | Anyone who wants it done right in one visit |
Black mulch is the most common pick around here, with brown, red and natural shredded bark close behind. Tell us what you like when we quote and we will match it.
How Much Mulch Do You Need?
Mulch is sold by the cubic yard. One cubic yard is 27 cubic feet, so it covers about 324 square feet at 1 inch deep. Most beds need 2 to 3 inches, which means one yard covers roughly 108 to 162 square feet.
| Depth | One cubic yard covers | 2 cubic foot bags per yard |
|---|---|---|
| 1 inch (top off) | About 324 sq ft | 13.5 bags |
| 2 inches (refresh) | About 162 sq ft | 13.5 bags |
| 3 inches (new or bare beds) | About 108 sq ft | 13.5 bags |
To size your job, measure the length and width of each bed, multiply to get square feet, add the beds together and divide by the coverage for the depth you want. Or skip the math and we will measure it when we quote your mulch installation.
Bed Edging That Holds a Clean Line
The edge is what makes a mulch bed look sharp. We cut a clean trench between the lawn and the bed so the grass stops creeping in and the mulch stays where it belongs. It gives the mower a clear line to follow and keeps the bed shape crisp all season. If your bed edges have gone soft or the lawn has grown into the beds, bed edging is part of every refresh we do. Keep the lawn side just as sharp with weekly lawn mowing and edging.
How Mulch Installation Is Priced
There is no flat price, because no two yards have the same beds. These are the things that set the cost of a mulch installation:
- Bed size. Total square feet sets how many yards of mulch the job needs.
- Depth. A 1 inch top off takes far less material than 3 inches on bare beds.
- Mulch type and color. Some mulches cost more than others.
- Bed condition. Beds full of leaves, weeds or old matted mulch need more prep.
- Edging. More bed edge to cut means more time.
- Access. Beds behind fences or far from the driveway take longer to fill.
You get one clear price for the whole job before we start.
Mulch or Stone Beds?
Some homeowners want landscape rock or river rock instead of mulch. Both have a place. Here is the honest tradeoff.
| Mulch | Landscape rock or river rock | |
|---|---|---|
| Look | Soft, natural, dark color | Clean, bright, permanent |
| Plants | Feeds the soil as it breaks down, keeps roots cool | Holds heat, better around few or no plants |
| Upkeep | Refresh once a year | Rarely replaced, but leaves and debris settle in |
| Changing it later | Easy to switch | Hard to remove |
For beds full of shrubs and flowers, mulch is usually the better fit. Rock works well along foundations, side yards and spots with no plants. We can install either one.

Best Time to Mulch in the Valley
Spring is the busy season. Mulch searches in our area peak in April and May, right after the beds are cleaned out and before plants fill in, so spring slots go first. Pair it with a spring cleanup and the beds get cleared, edged and mulched in one trip. Fall mulching works too: a fresh layer helps protect roots through the Ohio winter.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does it cost to have mulch installed?
The cost of mulch installation comes from how much bed space you have, the depth, the type of mulch, and how much prep the beds need. Beds full of leaves, weeds or old matted mulch take longer, and beds that are hard to reach take more time to fill. Bed edging is part of the job. We measure your beds and give you one clear price for the whole job, and the quote is free.
What is the 3-3-3 rule for mulch?
The common version of the 3-3-3 rule is: spread mulch about 3 inches deep, keep it about 3 inches away from tree trunks, plant stems and your siding, and give trees a ring about 3 feet wide. The point is enough mulch to hold moisture and block weeds, but never piled against wood or bark, where it holds water, invites rot and gives insects a way in.
How deep should mulch be?
Most beds do best with 2 to 3 inches of mulch. Bare or brand new beds usually get the full 3 inches. Beds that were mulched last year often only need an inch or two to refresh the color and cover thin spots. More is not better: once mulch gets much deeper than 3 or 4 inches, water and air have a harder time reaching the roots.
Is it cheaper to buy bagged or bulk mulch?
For large beds, bulk mulch is usually cheaper per cubic yard than bags, and a yard of mulch equals 13.5 bags of the common 2 cubic foot size. Bags make sense for one or two small beds. Bulk means you need a truck or a delivery and a place to dump it. With mulch installation, we bring the mulch and spread it, so you skip the hauling.
How often should mulch be replaced?
Most beds in Northeast Ohio look best with a fresh layer once a year, usually in spring. Mulch fades in the sun and breaks down into the soil over time, so a top off of an inch or two brings back the color and depth. Beds that were done heavy last year may only need a light refresh, and we will tell you if that is the case.
Should old mulch be removed before adding new mulch?
Not always. If the old layer has broken down and is thin, new mulch can go right on top after the bed is cleaned out. If years of mulch have built up too deep, or the old layer has matted into a crust that sheds water, it needs to be loosened or thinned first. Piling new mulch on top of a thick old layer is how beds end up too deep and plants suffer.
